They will enhance their ability to understand and interpret what they read. When enhancing their writing abilities, they will go through guided writing activities and feedback from instructors and peers, as well as improve their writing proficiency, including grammar, vocabulary, and organization.
Books we will be reading:
Session 1 - "Cheaper by the dozen," by Gilbreth, Frank
Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey is a classic, laugh-out-loud memoir about life in a big, unforgettable family. Meet the Gilbreths—twelve lively kids raised by two efficiency experts who treat household routines like scientific experiments. From synchronized bathroom schedules to family council meetings, nothing is too chaotic for their father’s stopwatch and clipboard.
Filled with heart, humor, and a deep sense of family, this timeless story is based on the real lives of the authors and their inventive parents.

Session 2 - "Front Desk" by Yang, Kelly.
Front Desk by Kelly Yang is not only a heartfelt and inspiring novel about courage and the immigrant experience, it is also a winner of the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature. Ten-year-old Mia Tang has a lot of secrets. For starters, she lives in a motel—not a house—and helps her parents manage it while they secretly shelter other immigrants. She dreams of becoming a writer, even though English isn’t her first language.
Based on the author’s own childhood, Front Desk is a powerful story about resilience, hope, and finding your voice.

Books we will be reading:
Session 1 - "Animal Farm" by George Orwell
A biting satire and powerful political allegory, Animal Farm tells the story of a group of mistreated farm animals who overthrow their human owner, dreaming of a society where all are equal. But as the pigs seize control, the animals soon learn that "some animals are more equal than others." Orwell’s deceptively simple novel exposes the dangers of totalitarianism and the corrupting influence of power.
First published in 1945, Animal Farm remains a timeless and compelling critique of oppression and propaganda.

Session 2 - "The Heart is a lonely Hunter" by Carson McCullers
In The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, Carson McCullers delivers a haunting, compassionate portrait of isolation in a small Southern town. At the center is John Singer, a deaf-mute whose quiet presence draws in a cast of struggling characters: a teenage girl longing for something more, a disillusioned African American doctor, a bitter socialist, and a troubled café owner. Each pours their soul into him, believing he understands—but none truly know him.
Published when McCullers was just 23, this literary classic explores the deep yearning for connection and meaning with extraordinary insight and emotional depth.
